Location of Project: 1842 treaty territory in the Keweenaw Peninsula of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan; Houghton and Keweenaw Counties includes 13,000 acres of chalcocite (Cu2S (Copper sulfide)) deposits along with many of the older historic mines. See a bird's eye view here.

Potential Impacts and Concerns:

  • Storm water runoff and any sump pits with drill cuttings and waste materials, particularly when involving chalcocite (copper sulfide minerals).
  • Potential aquifer contamination associated with drilling and the intermixing of brine water common in the western UP.
  • Unknown impacts to potential cultural resources.
  • Potential acid mine drainage risks within chalcocite zone copper sulfide deposits.

Status: Highland can earn a 65% working interest in these Keweenaw projects by completing a feasibility study by December 31, 2017.
