Brownfields
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) provides funding to KBIC Natural Resources Department to help develop the Tribal Response Program. KBIC received initial funding in 2003. The goal of the program consists of discovery, assessment, cleanup, and reuse of properties with known or suspected contamination. Click here to view the story map.
Open Dumps
Illegal dumping has a lasting effect on watersheds, and degrades the quality of drinking water, disrupts wildlife and contaminates soil. KBIC’s Title 110 strictly prohibits any open dumping within the Reservation.
Environmental Response
Staff respond to spills on the reservation and in the ceded territory. The team is equipped with a trailer unit containing absorbent boom, hard boom, and various supplies to help reduce contaminatnt spread and assist with cleanup. To report a spill please call (906) 201-0868
Legacy Pollution
Legacy sites are environmental hazards that affect our natural resources, cultural resources, and public heatlh. The quality and health of the water, wildlife, fish, plants and medicines continue to sustain our well-being and culture. the effects of practices such as historical mineral development; have included negative economic impacts associated with the boom and bust cycle of the industry, and environmental legacies that persist on our landscape today.
