Beach Monitoring
We monitor the beaches within the Reservation and sample for
E.coli to insure the water is safe for swimmers during the hot summer months. Sampling occurs from late May to the beginning of September. The results are sent to Western U.P. Health Department (WUHPD) where they post them for the community. We also post the results on social media to inform the public if there are any advisories or closures.
Ground Water Monitoring
Groundwater monitoring is divided into two categories, drinking water and monitoring wells. Drinking water is typically tested at residential
wells for people’s homes that do not have access to village water. We also have some monitoring wells placed throughout the Reservation that monitors for pollution that
might make its way into residential drinking water wells and ultimately into our surface water.
Surface Water Monitoring
For surface water monitoring, we sample the lakes, streams,
and rivers within the Reservation. We test for various pollutes in our waters to assure us that these bodies of water continue to reach their designated uses. You can find out more about our surface water monitoring program in our resources section where you can read our QAPP Monitoring Strategy.
